The words we use in the trade for stair parts can sometimes confuse people.
Here we attempt to help using a picture.

Handrail

Baluster or Spindle (supports handrail)

Open String (side of staircase)

Closed String (side next to wall)

Nosing (overhanging edge of step)

Riser (vertical part of step)

Tread (horizontal part of step)

Newel Post (main post of balustrade)

Double Bullnose Bottom Tread
